Octo-mom, Nadya Suleman has become infamous for harming her children. No, she didn't kill them or abuse them; many believe she has done something even worse... she brought them into this world. Through in vitro fertilization 33-year-old Nadya Suleman, a single unemployed mother of six, became a single unemployed mother of fourteen. Suleman has received so many death threats because of her, "unconventional decision", that both her and her publicist, Killeen Furtney, had to be placed in a secret location for their safety, and now Furtney has stepped down as Suleman's publicist due to those threats. Nadya Suleman's comments to Anne Curry on Dateline and new information being revealed everyday leaves no question in my mind that Suleman requires mental attention, I do however question why are we angry? Are we angry that in these tough economic times we as tax payers may have to pay to feed eight more mouths? Are we angry at the foreseen hardships these children will face? Or are we angry that after she found out she was pregnant with eight instead of one she did not go through selective reduction?
Women expecting three or more babies are often advised to consider selective reduction to reduce the number of babies down to just two. The procedure is often performed between the 10th and 12th weeks of pregnancy, and is recommended to the mothers to increase the chances of two healthy babies as oppose to multiple unhealthy babies. How does a mother choose which baby lives and which ones die? Most women that go through IVF are anxious to have a baby. How do you get rid of what you have prayed for just because you've got one too many?
In a Dr. Phil episode which aired on Friday February 13th, 2009, Dr. Phil made an excellent point, he said in so many words, now that the octuplets are here what is the solution? how do we keep the babies safe? That is a great question. Do we turn our backs on these babies or do we help make a better life for fourteen despite the selfish act of one?
